6 easy steps to become a
certified translation professional

Join the ATA.
·
Become
eligible to sit the certification exam, which takes place following the signing
of the code of ethics compiled by the ATA.

Have professional
and academic experience as a result of obtaining advanced qualifications in the
form of an approved interpretation and translation degree.

Gain a
degree that is not in either interpretation or translation and 2 years of
experience in professional translation.
·
Gain a
qualification that is not as high as a BA, along with 5 years of experience of
professional translation.
·
Complete the
3 hour open-book exam in your language pair.
Even though going through the stages of becoming a certified translation
professional helps to validate your translation expertise, you do not have to
be a certified translator in order to take a job performing certified
translations. In the United States, accreditation is not a prerequisite for
becoming a translator. This can be
confirmed by such U.S. authorities as the United States Citizenship and
Immigration Services (USCIS) which defines a certified translation when a
translation has taken place of a document and the translator is prepared to
write a signed statement vouching that the translation is completely accurate.
There is no need for the translator to attach any professional diploma, degree
or certificate to prove his or her ability as a certified translation professional.
